at the griffin: rania matar, monika merva...

so i went to the griffin photography museum in winchester for the first time last thursday night to view the videos created by myself and my classmates. the videos were awesome.

the griffin itself is also awesome. it is beautiful- rustic and airy- with wooden rafters. it is modest in size but the photos exhibited there pack a punch.
we spent most of our time there in the main gallery with the exhibition THREE CONCERNED WOMEN, Photographs by Susan Bank, Stella Johnson, and Rania Matar. i will spare you of my musings about their work. suffice it to say that they are very powerful. below is potent example by rania matar. (i saw this same photo in the spring at the danforth museum in framingham. i was very struck by it then too- wanted a postcard, settled for a terrible cell phone pic).

i also spent some time in the griffin gallery with the exhibit: CITY of CHILDREN PHOTOGRAPHS BY MONIKA MERVA. merva's work is also very powerful, disturbing even. it was pretty much teeming with overripe adolescent sexuality. reminded me a little bit of watching kids or gummo, but not quite as raw. the example below was a favorite... might be the sparkly hair...

waltham open studios: best of... follow-up

it seems that channel 5's Chronicle agrees with my choices of joshua winer and tim kadish...

diary

diary from nora g. on Vimeo.

this is my first attempt at movie making. it was created as a final project for my interactive media class (for which i also created this blog). i very much enjoyed the process of creating this music video, i found myself immersed in it. the video turned out rather repetitive/sloppy/choppy, so of course i want to continue editing it to death, but unfortunately (or fortunately?) there was a deadline so time did not allow. but, i am content being only semi-satisfied with the result, as this was such a great learning experience.

it will be exhibited for public viewing at the griffin photography museum this coming thursday (december 17th) at 7:30 pm. my extremely talented classmates' videos will also be shown. i am very excited to see everyone's work.

boz schurr

boz schurr is another wonderful artist whose work i found on doodler's anonymous. they have a blog entry on her drawing a day sketchbooks. a few more clicks led me to her flickr page, her blog, and her portfolio website. clearly boz knows how to utilize the web in her artistic pursuits. it is also clear that she is inexhaustible, as evidenced by the hundreds of dreamy intricately rendered sketchbook pages (see her flickr page).

living jewelry

she doesn't look one bit frightened. uncomfortable yes, but otherwise unfazed.

Wes ANDERSON'S fantastic mr. fox. fantastic, indeed!

it includes amusing jerky animal-puppet dances, banjo playing petey who is scorned for bad songwriting, bandit hats, a touching moment with a lone wolf, and much, much more... see it.

(interesting snippet about the film-maker's artistic process)

p.s. all i want for christmas is a bandit hat to call my own. and a posse of fellow thieves to sport it with. in case anyone was wondering. :)

have some fun with marcos roman

told you i'd be back with more colors.
discovered this kansas city based artist/designer on the arthouse co-op site (which i like a lot but i am a little sketched out by the fact that they charge you to participate in their projects. but, i guess everyone needs to make a buck to survive in this world, i'm just a cheap bastard). anyway, his work is all sorts of bright colors and magic, reminiscent of rainbows and lollipops. a much needed dose of visual prozac. do yourself a favor and explore his website.

waltham open studios: best of... part II: Joshua Winer

Students working on a large scale mosaic at the Eagle Hill School Cultural Center in Hardwick, MA. Executed with the help of mosaic muraling expert Joshua Winer.

The finished product. 12 feet wide and 22 feet high!

Joshua Winer is a muralist/mosaic artist/educator. His studio doubles as a classroom space for his mosaic classes. Much of Joshua's mosaic work is done in schools where he often serves as an artist-in-residence, working with both teachers and students on creating collaborative artworks in communal spaces. His studio was overflowing with mosaic materials, student work, and binders detailing the stages of his various projects. He was very interesting to talk with and clearly has a ton of experience in community arts and education. I hope to have the opportunity to pick his brain again sometime in the future.

waltham open studios: best of... pt. 1: timothy andrew kadish

the work of Timothy Kadish was my absolute favorite. his studio space was packed floor-to-ceiling with canvases varying in sizes, textures, and media. his subject matter was simultaneously playful (think pacman and the mario bros) and spiritual (think egyptian hieroglyphs), with a hint of extraterrestrial. he asked me to choose one piece that i would take home if i could (afford to, that is) but i simply couldn't. maybe 3 or 4 but just one? impossible.

seeking inspiration for my next assignment. this caught my attention (on doodler's anonymous  the eyes are getting sore, but it's worth it).

i am nobody: the prolific TMNK

i found tmnk (the me nobody knows) a few years ago on myspace (before it became known as the decidedly sketchier social networking site). this nyc based street artist is an art-making machine. his ability to turn out consistently beautiful and socially significant artwork at such a fast pace has always really impressed me. Equally impressive is the dedication, heart, and soul that he expresses in his work and on his blog.

he recently graced this blog with his presence, leaving a comment on one of my earlier posts. thanks tmnk. your encouragement is very much appreciated. you are quite the inspiration.
